১৫০৩ সালে ভিঞ্চি মোনালিসা আকা শুরু করেন।

১৭৭৪ সালে সর্বপ্রথম প্যারিসের লুভর মিউজিয়ামে মোনালিসার ছবিটির দেখা মিলে।কিন্তু ছবিটা মিউজিয়ামে কিভাবে এল কিংবা কে আনল এমন প্রশ্নের উত্তর মিউজিয়ামের কর্মীরাই জানতোনা! কারণ তারা কাউকে ছবিটি নিয়ে আসতে দেখিনি!
রহস্যময়ভাবে লুভর মিউজিয়ামে পৌছানো এই ছবি ১৯১১ সালে চুরি হয়ে যায়! রাতের আধারে চোরকে দেখে মিউজিয়ামের এক কর্মী পরদিনই চাকড়ি
ছেড়ে পালিয়ে যায়।পরে সে বলেছিল সে চোরকে দেখেছে। সেই চোর আর কেউ নয়।প্রায় ৩৫০ বছর আগে মারা যাওয়া ভিঞ্চি!!
১০ বছর পর এই ছবিটি আবার ওই মিউজিয়ামে পাওয়া যায়।লুভর মিউজিয়াম কতৃপক্ষ ছবিটি সংরক্ষনের জন্য প্রায় ৫০ কোটি টাকা খরচ করে একটি নিরাপদ
কক্ষ তৈরী করে। হয়ত ভাবছেন একটা ছবির জন্য এতো টাকা খরচ!! এই ছবির বর্তমান মূল্যের তুলনায় ৫০ কোটি টাকা কিছুই নয়। মোনালিসা ছবির বর্তমান অর্থমূল্য ৭৯০ মিলিয়ন ডলার।টাকায় পরিমানটা ৫৩৮০ কোটি টাকা!!
মোনালিসা কে? প্রশ্নটির উত্তর ভিঞ্চি নিজেও দিয়ে যাননি।২০০৫ সালে খুজে পাওয়া এক চিঠিতে অনেকে মোনালিসার পরিচয় খুজে পেয়েছেন বলে দাবি করেন।
১৫০৩ সালে লেখা এই চিঠিতে ভিঞ্চির বন্ধু ফ্রান্সিস জিয়াকন্ড তার স্ত্রী লিসা জিয়াকন্ডের একটি ছবি আঁকতে ভিঞ্চিকে অনুরোধ করেন। আর ওই সময় ভিঞ্চি মোনালিসার ছবি আঁকা শুরু করেন।
২০০৪ সালে বিজ্ঞানী পাস্কেল পাটে মোনালিসার ছবিকে আলাদা ভাগে ভাগ করে হাইডেফিনেশন ক্যামেরায় ছবি তোলেন। পাস্কেল আবিষ্কার করেন যে ভিঞ্চি যে রং ব্যাবহার করেছিলেন তার স্তর ৪০ মাইক্রোমিটার। অর্থাৎ একটি চিকন চুলের থেকেও পাতলা! পাস্কেল আরো আবিষ্কার করেন যে মোনালিসার ছবিতে আরো ৩টি চিত্র আছে। তাদের একটি সাথে লিসা জিয়াকন্ডের মুখের মিল খুজে পাওয়া যায়।সম্ভবত ভিঞ্চি বন্ধুর অনুরোধে লিসার ছবিটিই আঁকছিলেন। কিন্তু তিনি এমন কিছু দেখেছিলেন যা পুরো ছবিতে অন্য এক নতুন মুখের জন্ম দিয়ে দিয়েছে!
সান্ডারল্যান্ড ইউনিভার্সিটির এক সার্ভেতে মোনালিসা সম্পর্কে অদ্ভুত কিছু তথ্য পাওয়া যায়।মোনালিসাকে দূর থেকে দেখলে মনে হয় সে হাসছে। কিন্তু কাছে গিয়ে তার দিকে তাকালে মনে হয় সে গভীরভাবে কোন কিছু চিন্তা করছে। মোনালিসার চোখের দিকে তাকালে তাকে হাসিখুশি মনে হয়। কিন্তু তার ঠোটের দিকে তাকালেই সে হাসি গায়েব!
সান্দারলেন্ড ভার্সিটির ছাত্ররা মোনালিসার ছবির বামপাশ থেকে আল্ট্রা ভায়োলেট পদ্ধতি ব্যাবহার করে ভিঞ্চির লেখা একটি বার্তা উদ্ধার করে। বার্তাটি ছিল " লারিস্পোস্তা তোভাকি"। যার অর্থ "উত্তরটা এখানেই আছে।"
যুগের পর যুগ মানুষকে মুগ্ধ করে আসা মোনালিসার এই ছবি দেখে জন্ম নেয়া হাজার প্রশ্নের মাঝে সবচেয়ে বড় প্রশ্ন ছিল, এই ছবি দিয়ে ভিঞ্চি কি বোঝাতে চেয়েছিলেন?"
